Chapter 10. Bad Vamp

I GET THROUGH THE REST of the week at Vudu, my performance of acting unfazed by offers of sex and feedings improving with each passing night. When Friday comes, I’ve been warned about the crowd. It’s the busiest night next to Saturday.

I haven’t forgotten about the yellow-eyed vamp who’s yet to show himself. I don’t expect him to come back just yet, as it hasn’t been that long since he killed me. And since I now have all the time in the world, I’ve become patient in waiting.

I also haven’t had the chance to investigate the backrooms yet, but I’m taking my time. Once the staff are comfortable around me, I’ll seem less suspicious snooping around. Dorian thinks my cameras theory is correct... or at the very least, someone’s watching from behind the mirror walls. He also thinks Theo is the one who authorized putting cams up (if any), since he’s pervy.

Veronica has been up to her usual shenanigans. When I tried to make peace with her yesterday, she’d told me to fuck off. Oliver, Shawn and two others named Alejandro and Red, have been much kinder.

Xena, Cole, Katrina, Tom and Aiyana have been helpful on the floor – they’re the other servers who work alongside me every night.

I walk to the bar tonight with a piece of paper in hand, one that has a complicated drink order scribbled on it in my speedy handwriting.

I hand the paper to Oliver. “Had to write this one down,” I say, waiting for his reaction as he takes it from me.

He silently reads over the ticket, his brows coming down as he does. “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me! Who the fuck ordered this?!”

I look over my shoulder at the twenty-two-year old who showed up solo. “Pink hair over there.”

“This ain’t Starbucks,” Shawn complains, seeing the paper. “We don’t put together no fifteen-ingredient specialty shit! Half a pack of Splenda? The fuck is that!”

Oliver leans on the bar, his brown eyes glowing amber as he gets closer to me. “Tell her she can order a drink off the menu the way it is. We don’t do this shit here.”

“Will do,” I say, as I watch him wad up the paper and throw it across the club.

The twenty-two-year-old isn’t happy to hear about the bartenders’ refusing to make her a specialty drink, and she demands to see a manager.

“Fine,” I say, gritting my teeth. “I’ll go get one.”

The manager on shift tonight is Theo. I haven’t needed to bother any of them yet, but of all nights for a customer to demand to see one, it’s him on shift, right? Of course...

I go upstairs, knocking on Theo’s half-open door, opening it once he says “Come in.”

As soon as he sees me, his eyes brighten that eerie yellow. I ignore it, my gaze falling on the black tile, as I explain the situation to him. He gets up from his black swivel chair and follows me downstairs, insisting I lead the way.
